The Longest Reigning Champion Of The Modern Era!
It’s not easy to boo CM Punk. He may be a vile, conniving, heartless character who disrespects the fans and weasels his way out of championship matches, but there will always be a crowd of people in every stadium and arena to cheer him on. And that’s because, quite frankly, he’s the best damn superstar of the modern age and everyone knows it…even the ones who love to hate on him. He’s the greatest heel the company has had to deal with since Triple H. He’s arguably the best in-ring performer since Shawn Michaels, rivaled only by The Undertaker. He’s a bonafide master of the microphone; one that he uses to deliver brutal honesty with, and has been the WWE Champion for more than a whopping 425 days!
Can you even begin to believe that number? The last time we saw someone else hold the WWE Championship was back in November 2011! It’s 2013, and CM Punk is still the champion. He has headlined every single PPV (except TLC) and almost every single Raw of 2012 and didn’t fail to keep the title around his waist. Best in the world? I think it’s safe to yes, he is.
CM Punk likes to talk about facts. Here’s a fact. CM Punk has done what no superstar has been able to do for the last 12 years, and that is bring genuine importance back to the WWE Championship. Instead of just swinging around from person to person, the title now means something. After staying on Punk’s shoulder for more than a year, the title feels like an extension of the Straighedge Superstar, and any wrestling fan will be at the edge of their seat to find out who, if anyone, can break the streak and take the title away from him. And that person, whoever it may be, will hold with them a prestigious item worth fighting for simply because it remained around someone’s else’s waist for what seems like an eternity; someone who did whatever it took, hook or crook, to ensure he never left the building without the coveted WWE Championship.
We’re at a point now where CM Punk could very well lose the championship to The Rock. I’m a big, big fan of The Rock so needless to say, seeing him as the WWE Champion again would be awesome. But, if by means of “outside interference”, CM Punk should retain the championship at the Rumble, I have no problem with that whatsoever. I just had to create a wallpaper – an epic one – to highlight CM Punk as the best damn champion of the modern wrestling era. I may hate him as a heel, but that just means he succeeded at his job.
It’ll be interesting to see where Punk’s reign takes him from here if he retains next week. Will it be Streak vs Streak at WrestleMania if and when Punk faces The Undertaker? Will it be CM Punk vs Stone Cold? Will Paul Heyman – the greatest, most heinous manager one could ever ask for – turn on Punk and unleash Brock Lesnar on him? Only time with tell. With the ruthless band of rogues known as The Shield ready to “maintain the balance of justice” at moment’s notice and with WrestleMania not too far away, one can only imagine where CM Punk’s burning hot career will lead him, and if or not the WWE Championship will follow him down the same road. Download and enjoy, all!
